Right-to-Work Campaign

As most of you know by now, the National Right-to-Work Legal Defense Foundation has targeted Michigan in 2008. Their strategists believe that if the Foundation can get a Right-to-Work initiative passed in Michigan, a union state, that they can sweep the rest of the nation with ease. To succeed in imposing their values on Michigan workers and their families they must get over 300,000 registered voters to sign the initiative petitions, and they consider the Presidential Primary on January 15, 2008, a prime opportunity to gather a third of the necessary signatures.

While we will fight tooth and nail to defeat this anti-worker campaign wherever or whenever it crops up, we believe our best defense is to avoid a battle altogether by keeping this heinous initiative off the 2008 ballot. To accomplish this task we need ail the help we can secure from true trade unionists, and we are looking toward the local union leadership to provide this list of volunteers to keep the union movement alive. I strongly urge you and the other leaders in your local to cooperate with this effort by recruiting from your membership those individuals who want to protect their income, retirement, and other benefits and defeat this force from Washington, D.C. You should also notify your appointed personnel that they will be expected to volunteer to safeguard their union and its membership.

Attached you will find a January 15, 2008, Presidential Primary Election Day volunteer registration form. This form should be filled out completely and returned as quickly as possible to Nancy Falcone, UAW Region 1 CAP Department, to ensure we can assign volunteers to duties and locations as close as possible to their home areas.
